Mental illness is a hidden evil, which distorts thinking, emotions and behaviour. About 25% of adults experience some form of mental disturbance, and about 5% suffer serious mental illness.

Unfortunately, our tolerance toward patients struggling with mental health issues is poor. Negative social attitudes can worsen their isolation, reduce support, and speed up their deterioration.

  • Should I present the truth for people with crazy beliefs?

    Open or Close
Unusual beliefs in people without a mental illness are better addressed and discussed. On the other hands, patients suffering from delusions should not be directly challenged. Delusions, by definition, are fixed unshakable believes that contradicts reality and can't be changed by logical reasoning. Medications are necessary for the underlying disorder; and you should consult a mental health professional.
  • Depression vs. Sadness! What's the dividing line?

    Open or Close
Unfortunately, people still have a hard time understanding or accepting the diagnosis of depression. Depression is a very common disorder, which affects 20 % of women and 10 % of men; and is often undiagnosed. Treatment is usually rewarding in allowing patients to function despite the difficulties. Medications are NOT addictive, and can be stopped if necessary. Only depression will come back.
  • Should I fear asking about ideas of self-harm?

    Open or Close
Self-harm is an unhealthy way to cope with or express overwhelming emotional distress. Talking about suicide with someone who is depressed won’t put the idea of suicide in their mind if they are not already considering it. In fact, exploring the individual's feelings can provide an opportunity for communication and intervention before it escalates to an actual suicide attempt.
  • Psychopaths are mainly found in Jails?

    Open or Close
Not always. Some psychopaths find some relief through some unhealthy yet not illegal, relations e.g. being an oppressive supervisor or an authoritarian partner. You can't fully rely on premonition to spot people with twisted personalities, and remember that many criminals who got eventually arrested, were at some points living among the public, some were even very charming.
